AMCU wants independent commission into Marikana
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
President of the Mining & Construction Union Amcu, Joseph Mathunjwa has called for an independent commission to identify the true culprits behind the Marikana massacre.

Mathunjwa briefed journalists in Sandton this morning after the Presidency's update on the Farlam Commission of Inquiry recommendations, more than four years after 44 people were killed on the platinum belt.
Mathunjwa insists that a few individuals alone can't be responsible for the Marikana massacre.
"In every organisation you've got a level of responsibility of people who are responsible for the organisation. For instance, former police commissioner, Riah Phiyega reported to the then Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa."

Mathunjwa said that it was not up to Phiyega or Minister Mthethwa to "order" police members to "kill" mine workers.
"We demand a commission, facilitated by a credible independent body, to get to the truth of who - at the highest level - were responsible for the Marikana massacre," he told journalists.
He added that only when someone is held responsible will the community of Marikana be able to heal.
