Analyst: ANC NEC will discuss Zuma recall
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Political analyst, Professor Mcebisi Ndletyana, believes the African National Congress' (ANC) newly-constituted National Executive Committee (NEC) will end up recalling President Jacob Zuma.

It is the first NEC meeting since the election of new ANC leadership at the party's national conference in December.
Ndletyana says it would defy logic if the NEC decides to keep President Zuma in the Union Buildings until the 2019 elections.
'The recall will definitely be discussed. They have been waiting for this moment. He [President Zuma] has his back against the wall, he is no longer the president. Cyril Ramaphosa is the new president and most of them will most likely support Cyril because they know he will be the new president of the Republic."

He argues that Zuma's explosive announcement of a judicial commission inquiry into state capture is a clear indication that power has shifted back to the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House.
Zuma gave the green light for Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo to investigate state capture after resisting the implementation of former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's recommendations for months.

"In the case of Zuma, as was the case of (former President) Thabo Mbeki, he doesn't have the backing of the party anymore or presidency. It is difficult for him. Power certainly shifted. The president of the ANC is the norm of power. He appoints. He fires. People are keen to protect their own jobs."
