ANAs not administered at most schools: Sadtu
Updated | By ANA
Most schools in South Africa boycotted the controversial Annual National Assessment (ANAs), the SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) said on Friday.
“The National Executive Committee (NEC) received a comprehensive report for our structures that clearly indicated that a great majority of sites did not participate in the administering of ANAs,” the union said following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that was held in Johannesburg this week.
“This is against a constant misinformation campaign that the Department of Basic Education had embarked on a desperate attempt to give an impression that the ANAs were taken up by a majority of the schools. The NEC extended a word of gratitude to all members for overwhelmingly heeding the call not to administer ANAs,” said Sadtu.
The ANAs, which are a tool to assess pupils’ literacy and numeracy, were set to take place from November 26 to December 4.
Majority union Sadtu and three other unions had been at loggerheads with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga over ANAs, and had rejected the tests in their current form.
The unions accused Motshekga of renegading on an agreement to postpone the ANAs until a consensus was reached between the parties.
Sadtu said it was preparing to participate in the re-modeling of ANAs.
“We are of the view that this was the last chapter on ANAs as we prepare ourselves to participate in the task team meant to re-model and introduce a new tool to assess the state of health of our education.” - ANA
