“The [ANC] acknowledges the decision of Comrade John Block to resign as Provincial Chairperson and Member of Executive Council (MEC) of the Northern Cape following the guilty verdict by the court of law,” said national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.

“His resignation is consistent with the conduct of a disciplined cadre particularly in view of the resolutions of Mangaung and the [fourth national general council (NGC)] of the ANC.”

Kodwa’s comments follows Wednesday’s Northern Cape High Court ruling. Block was found guilty of fraud and corruption in relation to provincial government tenders. The ruling was made three days after the ANC had wrapped up its 2015 NGC wherein the party resolved to remove any and all corrupt leaders from its ranks.

On the evening after the court’s ruling was made, Kodwa had commented: “The ANC has noted the judgement on the matter of the case of Comrade John Block which has been before the court for some time. We will await the sentencing by the court before we can give a full response on the matter. Until then, the ANC will refrain from commenting.”
