ANC to launch #BlackLivesMatter campaign
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The African National Congress (ANC) and its alliance partners the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the South African Communist Party (SACP) will launch a #BlackLivesMatter campaign in solidarity with protesters in the USA.
ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte made the announcement during a virtual media briefing on Thursday.
Protests have rocked the US following the death of 46-year-old George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis.
"South Africa is standing to be counted,” said Duarte.
“The USA and it's African American community in particular played a critical role against our own struggle of the institutional racism of apartheid. We must as a nation add our voice in solidarity to their call that black lives matter," said Duarte

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa will launch the campaign on Friday.
"We will start our own ‘Black Friday’, where we are called to wear black each Friday for the next three weeks," added Duarte.
