The ANC in the Nkangala region in Mpumalanga is facing some questions following the arrest of one of the party's councillors for murder.

Moses Mofomme, who hails from Victor Khanye Local Municipality, was part of a group of four suspects who were arrested on Monday.

They are accused of killing a bouncer at a local tavern earlier this month.

They appeared in the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and will apply for bail next week.

ANC regional spokesperson Sello Matshoga says the region has temporarily suspended his membership.

“The ANC leaders both in the movement and public service should at all times behave in an exemplary manner.

"Having taken an oath to serve councillors are expected to uphold the constitution and thus it calls for the ANC to take firm action should the courts find against him.

"In the interim, the disappointing murder allegations call for the ANC to take all necessary precautionary and disciplinary steps to mitigate this aghast matter.

"Given the fact that the ward councillor has been formally charged and his membership will be revoked and temporality suspended and disciplinary process activated."

Matshoga says the law must take its course.

“The ANC believes in the due process of the rule of law and has confidence in the criminal justice system.

"More importantly, the ANC is calling upon all our members to co-operate with the law enforcement agencies in this matter."
