ANC councillor arrested for rape in Soweto

Police have arrested a 44-year-old man for the rape of a woman in Braamfischerville in Soweto.

The suspect is an ANC ward councillor in the City of Johannesburg.
Jacaranda FM News understands that the politician is from the Soweto constituency.
It is understood that the 41-year-old woman was walking home alone from a local tavern on Sunday morning when he was approached by the suspect.
He allegedly grabbed and dragged her to the nearby field and raped her repeatedly.
"It is alleged that the man pointed the victim with a knife and punched her with a fist on the face before forcing her to undress and raping her," said police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
"The matter was reported to the police and the suspect was arrested later on the same day. He is expected to appear before court soon on charges of rape."
The suspect has been detained at Meadowlands police station.
