The African National Congress (ANC) has endorsed Johannesburg’s Finance MMC Jolidee Matongo as the city’s new mayor.

The city has been without a mayor for almost a month since the death of Geoff Makhubo due to Covid-19 complications in July.
The ANC’s Sasabona Manganye says the region sent three nominations to the provincial executive committee.
“The region nominated three names as per the ANC guidelines, and the names were submitted to the PEC. The PEC convened to consider the submitted names and recommended to the NEC, which conducted a rigorous interview of the candidates and decided on the appointment of Cde Jolidee Matongo as the ANC Joburg mayoral candidate.
“As the MMC of Finance, Jolidee Matongo has been at the centre of the implementation of the GDS 2040, which informed the key priority of the ANC-led Government of Local Unity (GLU). This makes it easier to ensures continuity of the ANC-led GLU in delivering services to the people of Johannesburg.”
The council meeting is scheduled on Tuesday and Matongo could be the mayor by Friday next week.
