ANC to face internal backlash over ‘step aside’ decision - Mathekga
The African National Congress (ANC) should expect internal backlash over some of the decisions taken at its national executive committee (NEC) meeting, says political analyst Ralph Mathekga.
The party's highest decision-making body resolved on Monday that secretary-general Ace Magashule and other members facing corruption and other serious charges should leave their offices within 30 days or face suspension.
Mathekga believes the NEC's decisions shows that the party is aware that something needs to change.
But he warns of that the ANC needs to expect backlash from certain quarters in the party.
"There has been resistance to this. What is most likely to happen is that those who feel aggrieved by the decision, such as the secretary-general of the party, would most likely mobilise with the ranks to push against the decision," he says.
He adds that it is not the first time the ANC is in such a position.
"We have seen far back with the removal of President [Jacob] Zuma as the deputy in government and it gave him time to mobilise within the party."
