ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule briefed the media at Luthuli House on Wednesday following the past weekend’s NEC meeting in Benoni.

The meeting came amid the country’s latest bout of rolling blackouts and a decision to put the cash-strapped South African Airways (SAA) under business rescue.

Magashule said the NEC was happy with the decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa on SAA.

“The NEC received a report on the situation at South African Airways and commended the decisive intervention by the President of the Republic to save SAA through the business rescue option, as well as the consultation process that preceded the decision.

“Firm action is required to improve the governance and performance of SOC’s by ensuring the appointment of skilled staff and qualified board members and protecting public institutions from improper interference.”

ANC spokesperson Dakota Legoete added that the time has come for the government to deal swiftly and decisively with the troubles at Eskom.

“We have asked our deployees to act swiftly on the matter of Eskom. I mean we in the past few years we’ve promised South Africans that we are going to deal with this matter (of load shedding), it’s recurring now.”
