ANC FS: We have no intention to defy the court

The elective conference of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State has once again been the subject of court action by disgruntled members in the province.

Some ANC members are unhappy with the way in which the conference has been constituted.

Last month, the Bloemfontein High Court ruled that the provincial conference couldn't take place until 29 branch general meetings had been rerun.

Provincial spokesperson Thabo Meeko says the provincial leadership is doing everything in its power to ensure everyone is "happy".

"We are doing everything to make sure our members are happy. Under normal circumstances this doesn't happen. Democracy in itself dictates that people are never happy with the outcomes of process. The ANC has no intention to fight its own internal democracy just because all of us just want to be happy."

The group, which is lobbying for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa as the next party leader, claim the branch meeting were not in line with the ANC's constitution.

The province has officially thrown its weight behind Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

"We are trying to reflect the spirit, that we doing everything to demonstrate to the court and people in the Free State that we have no intention to defy the court," Meeko says.

He is adamant that the province will take part in the governing party's elective conference kicking off at the weekend, saying "people must leave the ANC to conduct its business".

"It can never be a never-ending process. People have to internalise the fact that there are outcomes to a democratic process."
