The party’s deputy chairperson in the province Panyaza Lesufi and Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile are going head-to-head for the position of provincial chairperson.

The winner will replace Premier David Makhura, who has held the position since 2018.

Provincial secretary Jacob Khawe said the PEC met on Friday to address the issue of the 19 quarantined votes from Ekurhuleni region, in which Mzwandile Masina was provisionally re-elected as the regional chairperson.

Ekurhuleni held the conference a month ago but there were disputes about the participation of some 19 delegates from five branches, leading to the quarantine of the results.

Khawe told a media briefing that the five branches will be allowed to participate in a conference while the PEC deals with the issue.

“There was an invitation for an urgent NEC meeting, which we felt that we can't start the conference with the chairperson and the secretary of the province not being in the conference. What came out of the NEC was a decision, two fundamental decisions as it relates to Gauteng. It was decided that we must save the Gauteng conference.

“Secondly that the matter of Ekurhuleni, five branches ,19 votes be referred back to the PEC on that matter.”
