The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng claims the African National Congress (ANC) in the province wants to raise income tax in order to pay for e-tolls.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula was expected to make an announcement on the future of the controversial user-pay system on Saturday but the deadline was extended to allow for consultation.
Janho Engelbrecht, the DA’s Gauteng spokesperson on Roads and Transport, says that the people are already burdend by tax and simply cannot afford it.

“Government seems to be unable to fulfil their basic task. People have private security because the police are unable to fulfil their task. They put their children in private schools because the education system isn’t working. People have medical aid because the public health system isn’t working and now the ANC wants us to pay even more additional tax."
“People cannot carry the burden of paying for these things out of their own pocket because we sit with a government who is unable to fulfil the basic things they need to do.”
The DA has called on Gauteng Premier David Makhura to launch an inter-governmental dispute on e-tolls and to use the fuel levy to pay for the roads.
