ANC gathers for special NEC meeting to discuss Phala Phala report

Members of the ANC’s national executive committee were on Friday afternoon meeting in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg.
The special NEC meeting comes amid mounting speculation over the president’s exit possible - either by resignation or removal.
Cyril Ramaphosa is said to be considering his options following the independent panel report on the Phala Phala saga, which found he has a case to answer on allegations he violated his oath of office and broke anti-corruption laws.
ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe was one of the first senior party members to arrive at the venue.
Mantashe is know to be one of Ramaphosa’s allies, and has reportedly been at pains to convince the president to stay and tackle the implications of the panel’s findings against him
By early afternoon it was still unclear if the president would attend the meeting of the party’s highest decision-making body between conferences.
His detractors are expected to use the gathering to amplify calls for him to step aside.
The special NEC meeting comes some two weeks ahead of the party’s elective conference in December.
