ANC: ICC withdrawal long overdue
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
The African National Congress (ANC) says the government's decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) is long overdue.
Party spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says the ICC is an imperialist institution which is destabilising the African continent.
He says the ICC put pressure on the country in the Omar al-Bashir matter that could have created civil war among countries on the African continent.
Kodwa says the South African government's decision to withdraw from the ICC must aid in strengthening institutions in Africa.
"We must strengthen domestic institutions to defend and protect human rights. We must also strengthen like the African human rights court to ensure we do not undermine human rights," he says.
Responding to the decision by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to challenge this decision in court, Kodwa says the government must defend its decision.
"All parties in parliament agreed to this accept the DA. They believe imperialism is the only solution that must continue to guide us," he says.
