ANC kicks off discussions over new cabinet and premiers

The African National Congress' (ANC) tripartite alliance partner, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), says it will oppose the selection of individuals accused of corruption into top leadership positions in the sixth parliament.

The union says it looks forward to the meetings scheduled to start today to discuss the selection of cabinet members ahead of the establishment of the new national administration.

ANC top structures meet in Gauteng, following the general election results that the party won in eight provinces and garnered 57.5 % of the vote.

Cosatu spokesperson, Sizwe Pamla, has cautioned President Cyril Ramaphosa from "recycling" cabinet members.

"There are people who were hanging around the corridors of power since 1995 when the first cabinet was put together. If you were part of the government of national unity, after a quarter of a century, we think you should really step aside and allow new people with fresh ideas," says Pamla.

Pamla says the results should be a lesson to the governing party that people are running out of patience with the ANC and that Ramaphosa should act decisively when appointing the new cabinet.

"So, the president, if he wants to be the president of the ANC and doesn't care about being the president of the country, then he has to pay the price."
