Mabe briefed the media at the party’s Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The meeting came amid a prolonged period of load shedding as Eskom battles to keep the lights on.

Mabe said the ANC’s leaders are equally concerned about load shedding.

“We also are loadshedded. We are not off the hook. When our people in townships, in informal settlements, suburbs, in apartments or wherever they are found, face the devastating effects of load shedding, we too as leaders of the African National Congress are affected by that.”

Mabe said the ANC wants the power utility to improve its communication around load shedding times.

“We are not going to spend a lot of our energy and efforts dealing with personalities and the location of institutions.

Our immediate focus is that those that are at Eskom, must do what we are also doing, they must be able to communicate to the people, issue schedules that allow our people to plan, lower this load shedding schedules. We need energy security to be able to booster efforts towards economic recovery.”

Mabe says the party has instructed government to start planning the rollout of solar panels as an alternative energy source.

“Moving around entities and removing individuals is not going to solve the problem that the people of Alexandra and Soweto and all other areas of the country are facing. What is required now, is a practical programme that says this are the steps.

“They must also come up with package of incentives that they will be able to give to the general public to allow them to use alternatives.”
