Veteran African National Congress (ANC) MP Jaqueline Mofokeng has died.
The ANC caucus in the Gauteng legislature described her as a trailblazer for many ideas on matters of women empowerment.
She was one of the longest serving members of the Gauteng legislature, having served as a member for 20 years.
ANC caucus spokesperson Lesego Makhubela says Mofokeng was also passionate about youth development.
“Cde Jacqui has been a trailblazer for many ideas that are now public interest on matters of women empowerment and the protection of the rights of women and children. Cde Jacqui understood that the struggle for national liberation was equally a struggle against sexism and gender oppression.
“Cde Jacqui has a distinguished history in the anti-apartheid struggle and had an illustrious political life, she cut her teeth as a youth and gender activist in Tshwane where she served as the regional secretary and chairperson of the ANCWL. She currently serves as PEC member of the ANCWL in Gauteng, she also served as the spokesperson of the ANCWL PEC in Gauteng.
“Cde Jacqui was passionate about youth development as demonstrated by her involvement in various community development initiatives,” she said.
“The untimely demise of Cde Jacqui and her daughter Thato is a grim reminder that death is always with us and we are still in the battle against the invisible enemy called Covid-19. It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to an outstanding patriot, a champion for the marginalized and the downtrodden and the defender of the women and children.”
