Zikalala was speaking at the ANC’s 112th anniversary celebrations at Mbombela Stadium on Monday morning.

The party is hosting a series of events in the province before the delivery of its annual January 8 Statement on Saturday.

The ANC has already started with its list process in various structures across the country, which will culminate in the nomination of candidates who will represent the party following the general elections later this year.

Zikalala urged the party's national executive committee members to ensure that they produce a credible nomination list.

"We must be certain that those implicated in the Zondo Commission, VBS and other commissions appear before the (ANC) integrity commission as instructed by the national executive committee in April," he said.

The ANCVL took a resolution at its conference last year that the ANC must act against those implicated in the Zondo Commission and other corruption scandals.

In 2022, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo released the report into the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, Corruption, and Fraud in the Public Sector including Organs of State.

The report painted a bleak picture of the current state of government and also implicated some of the leaders in the ANC.

The commission’s fourth report found that R6.5 million of the money siphoned off by corrupt officials during the Free State asbestos audit scandal landed in ANC coffers.

The asbestos scandal is currently before the court, with former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule, businessman Edwin Sodi and several others facing charges of fraud and corruption related to the R255 million asbestos tender.

The commission’s chairperson, Raymond Zondo, found that no asbestos was removed, and Sodi’s Blackhead Consulting was not qualified to undertake the removal.

The report also found that several ANC officials benefitted from the money, which was paid through Sodi.

According to the report, the ANC's Paul Mashatile received more than R370 000, deputy minister Pinky Kekana R170 000, deputy minister Zizi Kodwa R174 000, and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi R45 000.

The party’s treasurer at the time, Zweli Mkhize, also received more than R6.5 million, which allegedly landed in the coffers of the ANC.

The commission further found that the ANC failed in its oversight role during the R1 billion housing project debacle in the same province.

Zondo made recommendations that he believes can assist in getting rid of corruption in government if implemented. However, they are yet to be implemented.

Zikalala warned the appointment of ANC members to higher office, despite them being implicated in corruption, will further undermine the support of the ANC in the upcoming elections.
