ANC must reconsider Zandile Gumede deployment, says Veterans League
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The African National Congress (ANC) Veterans League has called on the party to reconsider to controversial deployment of Zandile Gumede to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.
Gumede, who is facing fraud and corruption charges in connection with a multi-million rand tender, was recalled by the ANC as eThekwini mayor last year due to the multitude of service delivery issues facing the metro.
But in a surprise move last week she was sworn in as an MPL to replace the late former KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu.
Veterans League president Snuki Zikalala says the deployment of Gumede dents the image and integrity of the ANC.
"The issue of moral high ground is what sustained the ANC. Now a comrade, who has a dark cloud and she has not yet sorted it out in terms of appearing through the charges and showing her innocence, is then elevated to a high position.
"This matter needs to be re-looked at. We have got nothing against comrade Zandile Gumede.”
