ANC NEC accepts KZN court ruling

ANC Secretary General, Gwede Mantashe, says the party has accepted a ruling by the Pietermaritzburg High Court that nullified the party's 2015 KwaZulu Natal elective congress.

Mantashe addressed the media following a special National Executive Committee meeting in Irene, Pretoria, last night.

"The NEC has full confidence in the judiciary and accepts the judgement of the full bench of the Pietermaritzburg High Court," says Mantashe.
"The NEC however felt that there was a need for further consultation with legal counsel to gain greater clarity on the decision of the court".
Mantashe says the NEC has mandated the National Working Committee to establish a Provincial Task Team to start preparing for a Provincial Conference in KwaZulu-Natal.
With regards to the status of the PEC in KwaZulu Natal, Mantashe says it will not be disbanded immediately.
The NEC will take a decision on this matter within three days.
"Within three days we must appreciate whether this decision is appealable or not, but for all internal purposes then the PEC is going to be dissolved, that's why we are talking about a task team. You cannot have a task team on top of a PEC," says Mantashe.

"There is urgency on part of the ANC. Firstly, to go to a conference as soon as possible to have a PEC that's legitimate in place. Secondly, to ensure that that process is overseen by a team that is seen not to be biased or to pull all the various interests together", Mantashe says.
