ANC in North West refutes Molefe accusations

The ANC in North West has denied accusations that Brian Molefe is not a member of the provincial structure and should not be sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the province's list.

Molefe has been nominated to fill a vacant North West MP post in Parliament, and is set to be sworn in next week.

The ANC's secretary in North West Dakota Legoete has refuted claims by a former ANC Provincial Deputy Chairperson, China Dodovu, that the former Eskom and Transnet boss is not a member of the party in the province.

"I can confirm that Brian Molefe is a member in good standing in Ward 29 in Hartebeespoortdam in Madibeng. I can take photos for you of the records  - there is nothing he needs to hide," Legoete told Jacaranda FM news.

Dodovu earlier accused the leadership of the ANC of using the North West to impose Molefe on the National Assembly.

There is speculation that Molefe's sudden nomination is the first step to his appointment as finance minister as a replacement for the under-fire Pravin Gordhan.

Molefe quit as Eskom CEO last year, after he was named in former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's State of Capture report.

Legoete however, doesn't believe this should have any bearing on the appointment of Molefe as an MP.

"There is nothing to suggest there is a judgement against comrade Brian, particularly himself being in conflict with the law. And for now, if there is no report or judgement in a competent court of law it would be very wrong and unfair for us to want to place him in the court of public opinion. Those reports are not necessarily judgements, and can be taken for review," Legoete says.
