ANC ‘not capable of governing anymore’

The Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate for Johannesburg Mpho Phalatse says the African National Congress (ANC) is not capable of governing anymore.

Phalatse outlined her plans for the city at the party’s elections manifesto on Saturday.

She told the DA supporters that the ANC has had its time in government and has nothing more to offer.

“South Africa needs an urgent and drastic change of government. The crossroads we now find ourselves in cannot be more definitive and consequential.

“The ANC is not capable of governing anymore.  They served their purpose of fighting to dismantle Apartheid.  It is time for them to step aside and allow new leadership in our country that serves the interests of residents and no one else,” said Phalatse.

Phalatse added that South Africans are tired of the ANC.

“There is growing anger and frustration among South Africans.  They are so sick and tired of the abuse that corrupt local governments have inflicted upon them over so many years.

“Added to this, the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown have added so much further pain and suffering, with many having lost their livelihoods.  No caring government should ever be forcing their residents into unemployment, with very little to no safety net to fall back on.  It is cruel, unjust, and abhorrent.”

She said Johannesburg is not a world-class city anymore.

“Johannesburg is broken, but it can be fixed again.  At this moment, we cannot with a straight face pretend that Joburg is a world class city, when electrical substations with illegal connections in Soweto break down due to the unsustainable high demand, when illegal mining for gold in Linden is taking place right next to gas and fuel pipelines – setting up a possible fatal disaster when something goes wrong, when the residents of the Helen Joseph hostel in Alex have to collect water from Jojo tanks because there has been no running water in their facility for over two years.

“There is so much more I can reflect on, especially what I have personally seen during my visits of regions and constituencies across the metro.”
