The governing party is expected to kick off its agenda with a range of items on Saturday.

This includes the local government elections, the amendment of Section 25 by Parliament and a progress report on the Covid-19 vaccine rollout.

The party is also expected to address the elephant in the room amid ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule’s defiance of the step aside policy and the infamous letter suspending party president at a Cyril Ramaphosa.

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe says the party is not faced with a leadership crisis.

“We did say, and the president repeated this when he was answering questions yesterday in Parliament, that there was correspondence we saw, and we did say that we will deal with such correspond when we get to the meeting of the National Executive Committee.

“The ANC is very clear about how it carries forward and executes its decisions so it’s entirely unfair to suggest that the organisation is leaderless.

“The ANC does have a leader. President Cyril Ramaphosa is the leader so there is no crisis in terms of that.”

He adds the ANC would not shy away from publicising the outcomes of the meeting.

“At the end of the day, when the ANC rises from its meetings it’s got to make sure that its message is one that resonates with the unity of the entirety of its membership.”

He reaffirmed that Magashule remains the party’s secretary general, despite the step aside resolution.

“Even stepping aside itself does not impose unexacting leaders. That’s never been the intention. The stepping aside does not say we are unelecting leaders.“

The NEC meeting is expected to wrap up on Monday.
