Delegates at Nasrec has told party members in Parliament they need to conclude an inquiry into the feasibility of a media appeals tribunal by the end of 2018.

Chairperson of the party’s sub committee on communications Jackson Mthembu confirmed the decision to journalists during a briefing on Wednesday night.

He says members at the conference were angry that an inquiry has not yet been instituted.

Mthembu says they, as MP's, have been ordered by conference to determine whether such a tribunal is necessary.

“This matter has been sitting on our lap for quite some time. Our parliamentarians have been ordered that you have to move with speed on this matter so that South Africa has certainty,” says Mthembu.

He says the inquiry will have to determine whether self-or co-regulation, or establishing a new body, is needed to regulate the print media.

Conference has also instructed government to open up the paid TV space, especially to black owned companies.

He says government needs to ensure "there is no barriers to entry" adding "you know what the concentration is at the moment".

The party will also move to formulate a social media policy.

“The ANC in conference has agreed that we must as a matter of urgency, this incoming NEC must conclude on the ANC communication policy,” Mthembu said.

The policy will outline what members of the party are allowed to do in terms of communication, including the use of social media.

Mthembu explained the policy should be with the party’s branches and regions within six months’ time.
