The African National Congress (ANC) has described President Cyril Ramaphosa's meeting with Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini as "fruitful and constructive."

The two leaders met in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday amid rising tensions over land under the custodianship of the Ingonyama Trust.

Last week Zwelithini threatened the ANC with all-out war if the ruling party made good on moves to expropriate swathes of tribal land in the province.

President Ramaphosa told Zwelithini that expropriation land without compensation will not target communal land under the custodianship of traditional leaders.

"We have no intention to tamper with the land that is being administered by our chiefs on behalf of the people," President Ramaphosa said.

The president is spending the weekend in KZN as the ANC rolls out its Thuma Mina campaign ahead of next year's elections.

"We once more reaffirmed that the land that is under the control of Ingonyama Trust as per legislation and assured His Majesty that neither the government nor the ANC has any intention to take land from the Ingonyama Trust, which it has custody of on behalf of the people of KZN," Ramaphosa told ANC members in the province.

Ramaphosa and Zwelithini agreed to hold further discussions on the issue of land and expropriation without compensation.
