ANC ‘ready’ to elect Mpho Moerane as new Joburg mayor

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng says it is ready to elect Mpho Moerane as the new mayor of Johannesburg.
This comes two weeks after the death of late mayor Jolidee Matongo in a car crash.
The city is currently under the leadership of the council speaker and the city manager.
Municipal elections will take place in 30 days.
ANC Gauteng chairperson David Makhura said in the interim it remains important to have a new mayor and mayoral committee.
Makhura was speaking at a media briefing on Thursday.
"It is important that there is an executive leadership in the City of Johannesburg to continue to provide services to communities and particularly pay attention to matters of life and death.
“There are parts of the city where people are without electricity and people are sick. We saw this when we went to Soweto, we know its not only in Soweto," said Makhura.
He said in 30 days the new mayoral committee must fast-track the growth and development strategy for the city.
The city is expected to hold a council sitting on Friday where Moerane will be endorsed.
Makhura said the ANC’s coalition partners have indicated they will support the move.
"The first priority is to deal with electricity challenges in Johannesburg, we started having a discussion as a city and national government and the Eskom CEO in 2020, we were escalating electricity problems experienced in Soweto, Eskom was switching people off the grid, and this affected people who paid," said Moerane.
He said they have discussed the transfer of customers from Eskom to City Power.
