The governing party released the first draft of the list on Friday.

The list is headed by President Cyril Ramaphosa and the party's top six officials.

The candidates have been selected from ANC branches across the country which were submitted directly to and compiled by an independent agency.

Former president Jacob Zuma comes in at 74 on the list, amid speculation that the former head of state could be deployed to the National Assembly after next year's elections.

The ANC's acting national spokesperson, Dakota Legoete, says there is still some way to go before the list is finalised.

" The process will progress towards recalibration of the list according to the organisation’s list guidelines that stipulate that public representative lists ought to include a minimum of 50% women, 55% of serving Members of Parliament for continuity purposes, at least 20% youth, as well as a cross-section of skills.

All names on the lists will be vetted to ensure that they meet the criteria of the Independent Electoral Commission as well as to adhere to standards of ethical leadership articulated in the list guidelines and the resolutions of the party's national conference.

"These processes follow the conclusion of the provincial list conferences in seven provinces with the exception of the Western Cape, ordered to re-run and North West, scheduled to hold its own that same day."

The two outstanding provinces, Western Cape and North West, will hold their list conferences on December 27.
