ANC: South Africans need party to implement its policies

The ANC believes the party’s poor performance during the recent elections was due to the failure to implement its policies.

The liberation movement dipped below 50% in the national polls and was also forced to govern in a coalition in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The ANC is now leading a government of national unity with a host of former opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance.

ANC spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi briefed the media ahead of the second day of the party’s NEC lekgotla in Boksburg.

Godlimpi said the outcome of the elections was a wake-up call from the electorate to the ANC.

“The electorate is showing us the door, but they are doing so in conversation with us. They are saying, ‘We understand what you are about, but we think you are not taking it seriously.’ They are saying, ‘Act on these things [policies], or you are out’. So, we have no choice but to move quickly and do things better.”

The three-day NEC lekgotla is set to discuss measures to improve the efficiency of the ANC’s governance systems.

Godlimpi said good intentions are pointless if the party cannot put them into action.

“There is a relationship between the problems of the economy and bad governance. The other area that the president instructed the commission to focus on is how to improve the efficiency of our governance systems. We can have all manner of good intentions, but if we cannot translate them into workable government programs, we are pinching water.”
