Political analyst Theo Venter says the current ANC leadership faces an almost insurmountable task of renewing and uniting the party ahead of this year's general elections.

The party is celebrating 112 years of existence in Mbombela this week.

Venter says the failure to act against ANC members implicated in the state capture report hinders the renewal process.

"The ANC is challenged by an organisational problem that includes a financial challenge; it has become a very expensive movement to run; they pay a lot of people working for the party, and they have difficulty getting enough money to sustain themselves.

"Those renewal policies, they ask for a lot of re-engineering, and that is what we do not see; I don't see the ANC actively getting rid of the members accused of state capture or moving quickly on leadership that is spoiling the efforts."

Venter says the defection of former ANC president Jacob Zuma is also casting a shadow over the party’s celebrations.

In December, Zuma announced he will not campaign nor vote for the ANC in the upcoming elections but vote for the newly formed MK party.

"Zuma is currently playing the role of spoiler in the ANC, and he is going to make the ANC renewal very difficult. I think the ANC strategy at the moment is survival rather than renewal."
