Tshwane ANC mulls legal action over Wonderboom Airport

The African National Congress (ANC) in Tshwane says the party is discussing the possibility of laying criminal charges against outgoing mayor Stevens Mokgalapa for failing to do proper oversight at Wonderboom Airport.

Mokgalapa visited the airport on Wednesday after concerns were raised by the Wonderboom Airport Interest Group (WAIG) over the possibility that flights would no longer be allowed to depart or land at the airport due to length of the grass.

Mokgalapa met with the airport management to discuss the operational and financial management of the facility and gave them six months to pull up their socks.

The ANC believes the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane has run the Wonderboom Airport into the ground over the past three years.

The party’s regional chairperson Kgosi Maepa told a media briefing on Thursday that they also want to approach the public protector.

"Just see going into the Wonderboom Airport. The corrupt DA administration has run down an international airport in the capital city of South Africa in just 36 months. The DA mayor and its MMC have both failed to manage a local airport and destroyed everything that has been built over a period of time.

"The ANC is talking to affected parties and to our legal team to determine whether criminal charges should be laid against the DA mayor and his MMC for failing to do proper oversight. We also want to take the mater to the public protector."
