The party, already registered with the Independent Electoral Commission, was launched in December.

Former president Jacob Zuma has been campaigning for the MK Party and has publicly declared his intention to vote for it during this year’s general elections.

This has led to the ANC deciding to suspend the former president on Monday for bringing the party into disrepute.

ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula says uMkhonto weSizwe is the brainchild of the ANC.

"We (the ANC’s national executive committee) have also affirmed the action taken already by the organisation to challenge the existence of this MK Party, as it is the symbol of the liberation movement led by the ANC.

"At the same time, the deregistration of this party in the Electoral Court has been submitted. We are also challenging the trademark of uMkhonto weSizwe, as this is the trademark of the ANC."
