ANC Women’s League calls for peaceful exams

The African National Congress Women’s League in the Western Cape gave its support on Sunday to “all young people who have joined efforts to encourage peaceful exams”.

“Education is a fundamental human right deserved by all children in this country,” the league said in a statement.

“The ANC Women’s League Western Cape is encouraged by President [Jacob] Zuma’s decision not to increase [university] fees next year. We hope that this decision is an indication towards realising free education.

“As parents, we know exactly the toll the weight of university fees can take on families, but we would be amiss not to acknowledge the huge strides in easing that weight that the ANC government has taken over the period, through such interventions as NSFAS [the National Student Financial Aid Scheme] and university subsidies, and we know that the journey to complete free education is one the ANC is singularly committed to.”

The ANC Youth League, Young Communist League, SA Students’ Congress, and Congress of SA Students in the province had shown exemplary leadership in trying to quell the violence during student protests and their efforts were to be commended, the women’s league said.
