ANC: "Midrand violence orchestrated by EFF and Mashaba"

African National Congress (ANC) councillor in Johannesburg Matshidiso Mfikoe says last night's violence in Midrand was orchestrated by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the city's mayor Herman Mashaba.

"The mayor did not try and intervene when the violence broke out, instead he stood there and thanked the EFF for dealing with the thugs," says Mfikoe.

Mashaba was addressing an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) summit in Midrand last night when scuffles broke out.

Mfikoe says the trouble started shortly after the Speaker introduced the mayor, and someone wanted to raise a point of order.

"As the person said that, the EFF people rushed to him and told him to keep quiet. That is what started the violence because the man was not given an opportunity to raise his point of order."

Mfikoe says they were attacked after they left the hall.

"I was attacked outside by people who knew I was a councillor. Another person attacked me and said I was taking photos when I was not supposed to be taking photos."

Mfikoe will now seek advice from the ANC on whether she should lay any criminal charges.

Mashaba has already indicated that the city will be laying criminal charges against ANC councillors for instigating the violence.
