The governing party has resolved to amend the South African Constitution to expropriate land without compensation.

Afriforum's Kallie Kriel believes that the proposed change violates South African property laws.

"The ANC's plan to steal will not only destroy the economy of South Africa, but will also put the country on a road of renewed friction and conflict."

The Constitution however provides for expropriation of property with "just and equitable" compensation. This is supplemented by the Act for Expropriation which compels the state to pay the market value of the property.

The inquiry will now shift to whether the zero compensation, as proposed by the ANC, is in line with the higher law of the land.

Kriel is adamant that the proposed changes are unlawful and just for "their own interests".

"Expropriation without compensation boils down to a decision to commit theft and to place the country on the same road of destruction that Zimbabwe followed in its violation of property rights.

"We have worked hard for what we have and will not sit back and watch while properties are being stolen."

Newly elected ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa told delegates in his closing address at the party's national conference the new policy should be implemented in a way that will not negatively affect the economy, agricultural sector or food security.
