“Songezo Mjongile is out!” shouted delegates at the eighth elective provincial conference of the African National Congress in the Western Cape on Sunday as he lost the post of provincial secretary to Faiz Jacobs.

“Songezo is out! He is out! Faiz is in!” shouted a delegate before running around in celebration.

Mjongile had gone head-to-head with Jacobs, a favourite from the Seskhona People’s Rights Movement, on Sunday after fellow Seskhona member Andile Lilli chose to bow out of the close race so as not to split the voting base.

“This took such hard teamwork,” said another delegate from the Metro region.

“Now the ANC is on its way!”.

Mjongile was seen earlier on Sunday evening leaving the auditorium at the Cape Penninsula University of Technology in Belville, bag in hand.

ANC liaison officer Yonela Diko confirmed the new secretary had won with 338 votes of over 600 in total.

The rest of the new provincial executive committee was deputy chair Khaya Magaxa, assistant secretary Thandi Manyikivana, and treasurer Maurencia Gillion. Marius Fransman retained his position as provincial chairman.

“Now we can take Cape Town,” said the Metro member. -ANA
