ANCYL: Extortion rackets endangering economy, investment
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The ANC Youth League has expressed concern about the rise in extortion’s impact on economic stability and investment.

The youth league briefed the media on Tuesday morning on various issues affecting the country.
Doctors, schools and small businesses in several parts of the country have raised alarm about extortion rackets that demand so-called protection fees.
It is especially prevalent in parts of Eastern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
ANCYL President Collen Malatji urged Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to deal with the matter urgently.
"We must also address the concerning issue of extortions in the country, mainly in Gauteng, KZN and the Eastern Cape, which have been causing severe distress to local businesses and communities,” Malatji said.
“The rise in criminal activities aimed at extorting money from businesses is undermining economic stability and deterring investment in the region.
“The ANCYL calls for immediate and decisive action from law enforcement, and we urge Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu to take strong measures to deal with these criminals and restore safety and order in South Africa.”
Mchunu is expected to deliver a statement on the issue in the National Assembly on Tuesday afternoon.
