Andile Lungisa released on bail
Updated | By Algoa FM
Jailed African National Congress (ANC) Nelson Mandela Bay councillor, Andile Lungisa, was granted bail of R10 000 in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Friday.
This is pending his petition for leave to appeal his two-year jail sentence and conviction at the Grahamstown High Court.
Lungisa had been in custody since he was sentenced to an effective two years behind bars earlier this month, for assaulting DA councillor, Rano Kayser, with a glass jug during a heated council meeting in 2016.
At the time, Magistrate Morne' Cannon dismissed Lungisa's application for leave to appeal his conviction and sentence.
Lungisa has since appointed well-known Port Elizabeth lawyer, Alwyn Griebenouw, to petition the high court.
Lungisa's brother Ayongezwa Lungisa says they are dissatisfied in how the court handled Lungisa's case.
"We do think that there has been too much glitches in the manner in whcih the administration of the court itself has been handled, for now all issues that we are not satisfied with we will raise in court at Grahamstown."
He says the family is relieved by the outcome and that Lungisa will abide by his bail conditions.
"We are much relieved that he has been released on bail and as a very responsible man. He will abide by the bail conditions that we are sure of."
