Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to serve as acting president for a day.
According to the Presidency, Motshekga will stand in for Ramaphosa on Thursday while the statesman travels to Zambia to attend the funeral of the late President Kenneth Kaunda.
Ramaphosa is expected to deliver a message of support to the Zambian people on behalf of the South African government.
Deputy President David Mabuza is also absent.
Last week, Mabuza requested a few days' leave for medical reasons.
It’s understood Mabuza is still in Russia for a scheduled medical consultation.
