Angry Polokwane residents threaten total shutdown
Updated | By Lesetja Makhura
Threats of protest action left commuters in Polokwane in the lurch on Thursday due to a lack of taxi and bus services.
Many shops have also remained closed following threats of a total shutdown.
Communities have threatened to take to the streets to demand improved service delivery, with a lack of water, better roads and electricity causing concern.
Affected areas include the Polokwane CBD, Seshego, Mankweng, Lebowakgomo and Matlala.
The Polokwane Municipality has warned that any protest would be illegal, as the organisers failed to apply for a permit.
"Thursday will proceed as a regular working day. All roads, businesses, shopping centres and schools are expected to operate during their normal hours," the municipality said in a statement.
The police also warned residents against making any threats on social media.
"Law enforcement agencies are prepared to deal decisively and harshly with any individuals found responsible for instigating or participating in activities aimed at disrupting public order and safety,” said police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba.
"The SAPS will utilise all available resources to maintain law and order and ensure the protection of citizens and property.”
