Another 3 years needed to unblock Vaal River sewerage systems

The Department of Water and Sanitation has appointed eighteen contractors to unblock the sewer systems flowing into the Vaal River.

The blockage is affecting the flow of water into the Vaal River and local areas in Emfuleni local municipality.
Despite the progress made, departmental spokesperson Sputnik Ratau warns it might take three years.
"The challenge at this area has been ongoing for a couple of years and what we are looking at in terms of resolving this matter is that, between when we start the actual work sometime in May to June this year, it will take us nothing less than three years."
The department is now expected to start the process of finalising the appointment of the contractors.
"The department is in the process of finalising the appointment of contractors that will be working at the site on an emergency basis.
"Why the need to do this on an emergency basis, is to make sure that we accelerate the resolution of the protected sewage of raw sewer into Vaal River as well as the local household in the area," adds Ratau.
