Another Kusile unit returns to grid
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Eskom has announced that Unit 1 at Kusile Power Station returned to the power grid on Monday.
This after Kusile Unit 3 was returned to service in September and consistently delivering 800 MW.
The unit returns to the grid a month and a half ahead of the original schedule, bringing an additional 800MW into the grid.
In total the two units will be adding 1600 MW to the grid.
"This signifies that Eskom is on the right path to reducing and ultimately ending loadshedding," said Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa says the load shedding tide is turning as more Kusile units return.
He made the remarks at the closing of the ANC National Executive Committee on Monday.
"Our country has turned a definite corner as far as loadshedding is concerned, and levels and frequency of loadshedding is expected to improve during the fourth quarter. This is due to the return of Kusile units; embedded generation by private households and businesses; and demand management which, will be adding much needed capacity to the grid.
"The NEC highlighted the need for urgent extension and investment in our transmission grid through new and innovative methods of funding so we can speedily ensure renewable projects in the Northern and Eastern Cape can be brought online."
