A mineworker died during a
fall of rock at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Driefontein mine on the West
Rand on Thursday.
The mineworker was one of three workers who were trapped underground following a seismic event at Driefontein's Hlanganani shaft.
The miner's death comes one month after seven mineworkers were killed following a seismic event at the same mine .
The National Union of Mineworker’s (NUM) Peter Bailey says trade union is deeply concerned at Sibanye-Stillwater's recent safety record.

"Driefontein is running fast to break the record of fatal injuries in the mining industry within a short space of time after the seven workers that died.
"The NUM demand that a day of mourning be observed at Driefontein mine and it must not operate in honour and respect of the mineworker who died early hours of this morning. The fatalities that are happening at Sibanye-Stillwater are totally unacceptable."
Bailey says the situation cannot be allowed to continue and that the government needs to step in to ensure the safety of mineworkers.
