Anti-apartheid activist Max Coleman has died at the age of 95.
The Coleman family confirmed he died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday.
The former Human Rights Commissioner leaves behind his wife, four sons and grandchildren.
“There will be a private funeral service followed by a public memorial to celebrate his life. Details will be announced in due course,” the family said in a short statement on Monday.
Max and wife Audrey were bestowed the Order of Luthuli by President Cyril Ramaphosa last year for their meaningful contribution to the struggle for democracy, human rights, nation-building, justice and peace, and conflict resolution.
The Coleman couple was also the founding member of the Detainees Parents Support Committee, established to provide food, clothing and legal assistance to detainees under apartheid, as well as to monitor and publicise state repression.
