A coalition of civil society organisations under the banner of Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia will march in Johannesburg on Saturday.

This after the High Court in Johannesburg overturned the metro police’s decision to prohibit its march.

The High Court ruled in favour of the group on Friday.

The march was initially scheduled for Human Rights Day, but the JMPD stopped it due to threats of attack.

The court declared that the gathering is lawful in terms of the Regulation of Gatherings Act and the group is entitled to convene.

The group's spokesperson Dale McKinley says they will submit some demands at police stations and government departments.

“We will be submitting memorandum at the Hillbrow police station and the Johannesburg SAPS, in our memorandum we are addressing the police in particular and asking them to uphold the law and arrest those that are inciting violence and engaging in hate speech, and not to be biased on those who are engaging in peaceful activities.

“We will also be calling on the Department of Home Affairs to completely revamp the immigration system so that immigrants are not criminalised or without papers.

“We will also be asking our national government to do more to combat xenophobia at a national level and to also speak out and support immigrants,” says McKinley.
