Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili has confirmed the hospitalisation of a 43-year-old Paraguay drug mule.
The man was arrested on Sunday at OR Tambo International Airport on a flight from Brazil.
He is the 14th drug mule to be arrested in the country over the past two months.
At the time of his arrest, he released 20 suspected cocaine bullets.
Mosikili says the release process has been stopped following a medical condition.
"To date, there are close to 117 bullets that were released by this particular individual. Every time a bullet is released, it comes out with traces of blood, which indicates that there is a medical challenge in the stomach.
"This is an indication that those who take risks to swallow bullets that it is not safe at all. The risk is there, and you might have a rapture from within or the possibility of the bullets exploding, and when they explode they can lead to a loss of life."
The 43-year-old is the third suspect arrested in as many Sundays with so-called drug bullets in their stomachs.
