Assault case opened after Durban bullying video goes viral
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
A case of assault has been opened at the Malvern Police Station after a video showing a high school learner being assaulted by a fellow learner went viral.
The guardian of the 16 year-old opened the case yesterday.
The video, which has been shared thousands of times on social media, shows the Werda High School learner being confronted before being slapped, pushed to the ground and kicked several times.
The scuffle, which happened on Tuesday, apparently started after the victim reported the bully to school management for allegedly taking a knife to school.
The boy's sister, who is his guardian, says her brother is still somewhat traumatised.
"We are not going to let this stand. We are pretty much going to put our foot down and this will come to an end. We will make sure justice is served for my brother," she said.
Officials from the Department of Education are being deployed to the school to find out exactly what happened, while KwaZulu Natal police have confirmed that a case of common assault has been opened.
