The International Criminal Court recently took the major step of issuing the warrant for Vladimir Putin over the Ukraine war.

Government has come under pressure to made public its stance and say whether it will execute the arrest warrant.

Putin is due to visit the country for the BRICS summit in August and South Africa is a signatory of the Rome Statute.

The ATM's Zama Ntshona says as a sovereign state, the country must be allowed to make up its own mind.

"The South African courts are yet to domesticate the warrant. One of the things that the South African courts need to factor in is the issue of Russia not being a signatory of the Rome Statute and therefore the court must announce if he is affected or now."
