Attempted robbery leads to horror crash in Limpopo
Five people have died in a crash on the N1 in Limpopo,
following an attempted armed robbery next to the highway.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says two suspects approached a truck driver and tried to rob him next to the N1 south near the Kranskop Toll Plaza in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The driver managed to immediately pull back onto the N1.
That led to a Toyota vehicle driving into the back of the truck. The truck drove off, but the car came to a standstill in the middle lane of the highway.
Mojapelo says the fatalities occurred while the occupants were busy getting out of the car.
“Two other vehicles then slammed into them. Five people were killed on the scene. Three of them are girls between the ages of 7 months and 8 years old. A man in his forties and an elderly women in her seventies also died on the highway,” confirms Mojapelo.
He says three other women have been rushed to hospital.
Mojapelo says the truck driver reported the attempted armed robbery at the nearest police station and said shots were fired at the truck as he pulled away.
Cases of attempted armed robbery, attempted murder and culpable homicide have been opened.
