Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Council for Geoscience has confirmed that an earthquake hit east of Johannesburg over the weekend.

The 3.1 magnitude tremor was felt on Sunday morning at around 00:56.
According to the South African Seismograph Network, the epicentre of the quake was located in Brakpan.
The public is encouraged to record their experiences using the available online questionnaire.
"While we cannot confirm with absolute certainty that the earthquake was natural or induced, it is worth noting that the earthquake occurred in a region known for induced seismicity," said spokesperson Mahlatse Mononela.
The South African National Seismograph Network monitors seismic wave activities throughout the country.
